‘Unlimited holiday – sounds too good to be true!’

Whilst the announcement by Richard Branson this week to ‘offer staff unlimited holiday’ sounds great I can’t help but feel that this may actually deter employees from taking holiday.

The billionaire wrote: “The assumption being that they are only going to do it when they feel 100% comfortable that they and their team are up to date on every project… and that their absence will not in any way damage the business – or, for that matter, their careers!”

Is there ever a good time to take a holiday? I know from my own experience that the lead up to a well earned break normally means long hours to get as much work done and then handing over to colleagues to cover whilst I am away. If the assumption is that you will only take the holiday when ‘100% comfortable’ then this may never happen and could create a fear of ever going on holiday!
