Have you suffered an injury after a slipping accident?

Have you slipped on something that should not have been on the floor whilst in a shop or supermarket? If so, then you may be able to make a claim for compensation.

Who is at risk?

Supermarkets can be quite hazardous areas. Drinks or other products can be spilt causing a safety hazard, and it is therefore important for such premises to have regular inspections of the shop floor to prevent a risk of injury to customers and other visitors.

Who can claim?

Anyone who is a visitor or customer on someone else’s premises can claim against the owner or occupier of the premises if they suffer an injury after a slipping accident which they do not believe to be their own fault.

Employees may also be able to make a claim if they suffer an injury after a slipping accident at work, which they do not believe to have been their own fault, as they are entitled to a safe working environment.

Who is responsible for the accident?

If the owners or occupiers of the premises in which you had the accident did not:

  • have an appropriate system for checking the floor spillages, or
  • clean up the spillage effectively when discovered, or
  • did not have any warnings about a slippery floor

then you may be able to make a claim for compensation against them.

Similarly, employees should be provided with a safe place of work by their employers and if a worker suffers an injury because this responsibility is not met, then they may also have a claim against their employer. See the relevant section on ‘Accidents at Work’.
